“Many wonderful things are ahead,” said President Russell M. Nelson at the close of the October 2022 general conference. The prophet offered counsel on overcoming the world, affirmed God’s condemnation of abuse, urged Latter-day Saints to seek truth and announced 18 new temples.
Overcome the World and Find Rest
During the Sunday morning session, President Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said we can “find rest from the intensity, uncertainty and anguish of this world by overcoming the world through your covenants with God.”
“Making and keeping covenants actually makes life easier!” he said. “Each person who makes covenants in baptismal fonts and in temples — and keeps them — has increased access to the power of Jesus Christ.”
Overcoming the world is an ongoing process, he taught, involving repeatedly embracing and living the doctrine of Christ, cultivating faith through daily repentance, making and keeping covenants, and contintually strengthening our testimonies.
Actions like these change our natures and help us become a righteous people who love God and His Beloved Son more than anyone or anything. “As you let God prevail in your life, I promise you greater peace, confidence, joy, and yes, rest,” he said.
He assured Saints that despite the “onslaught of sobering news,” “so many wonderful things are ahead. In coming days, we will see the greatest manifestations of the Savior’s power that the world has ever seen. Between now and the time He returns ‘with power and great glory’ (see Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:36), He will bestow countless privileges, blessings and miracles upon the faithful.”
“In coming days, we will see the greatest manifestations of the Savior’s power that the world has ever seen.”
What Is True?
During the Saturday morning session, President Nelson affirmed the Savior’s teachings and the Church’s stand on abuse, what he referred to as “a grievous sin,” and asked fellow Saints to help protect the innocent.
“Let me be perfectly clear: any kind of abuse of women, children or anyone is an abomination to the Lord,” the prophet said. “He grieves and I grieve whenever anyone is harmed. He mourns, and we all mourn, for each person who has fallen victim to abuse of any kind. Those who perpetrate these hideous acts are not only accountable to the laws of man, but will also face the wrath of Almighty God.President Nelson urged Latter-day Saints to study the aids on the Church website, be alert for potential victims and “act promptly to protect them.”
The prophet also warned against the adversary’s “efforts to blur the line between what is true and what is not true.”
“God is the source of all truth,” he said. “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints embraces all truth that God conveys to His children, whether learned in a scientific laboratory or received by direct revelation from Him.”
President Nelson concluded with an invitation for Latter-day Saints to “ask the Lord to confirm that what you have heard [during this conference] is true.”
Focus on the Temple
Before announcing the locations of 18 new temples at the conclusion of the Sunday afternoon session, President Nelson showed an excerpt from season four of the Book of Mormon Videos series depicting the Savior’s appearance to the people of Nephi at the temple.
“[The temple] is His house. It is filled with His power,” the prophet said. The Lord is making temples more accessible and “easier for each of us to become spiritually refined.”
“I promise that increased time in the temple will bless your life in ways nothing else can,” he said.
