Union Island Receives Aid After Hurricane Beryl

On July 10th, missionaries and a few members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints went to Union Island to bring donated supplies and assist in the relief effort from the devastation following a category 4 hurricane that hit the eastern Caribbean on July 1, 2024. Union Island is a Grenadine island that is part of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Recently, due to Hurricane Beryl, many homes, structures, and the island as a whole were damaged and left destroyed. The 'Helping Hands' group from the church was able to travel to the area and serve the island citizens during this difficult time.

Working alongside other organizations, the church helped distribute food and other items. It also donated 100 hygiene kits to Taraji Foundation Inc. SVG, a local non-profit organization located in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The non-profit organization will distribute the kits to shelters of their choice.

After staying the night on the island, volunteers continued helping to clean debris off the roads, such as telephone poles, trees, and other large items, for an additional day. As a group, they could help individuals move things that otherwise could not have been done alone. They also assessed the destruction caused by the hurricane and asked locals what their needs were to help them return to life as they knew it.

The church missionaries returned later in the month to the Grenadines to unload a ship of four large shipping containers from Latter-day Saint Charities. They were gone for four days and three nights, continuing to give assistance. They were able to hold a Sacrament Meeting on Union Island and also a Devotional, the first since the devastation caused by the hurricane.
