Christmas came a month early when the Salvation Army received a welcome donation of 144 hampers containing non-perishable food items on November 8, 2023.
These hampers contained much-needed items to assist the ever-growing number of needy families and individuals in Barbados. Salvation Army Divisional Commander Major Robert Pyle expressed elation at the donation. He said that this assistance was especially timely, as it would assist the 22 people who recently lost their residences and belongings in the fire that destroyed four houses in the Westbury area.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worldwide held its International Day of Service on Saturday, October 28, 2023, but due to logistical issues, the Barbados Bridgetown Mission of the Church deferred their event until mid-November.
The Humanitarian Missionaries, Elder Jay & Sister Kathi Kirkham, coordinated this project by first obtaining the list of required items from the Salvation Army, then purchasing them from Massy Stores, and organizing the packing with members and missionaries at the Christ Church Chapel. The members and missionaries were very happy to take part in this service project, and the handover took place at the Salvation Army Headquarters, Reed Street, Bridgetown. The Church has also donated BDS$78,000 towards other supplies aimed at helping the needy.
