Supporting Disaster Preparedness A Heartfelt Contribution from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently partnered with the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government (RDLG) and the Water Resources Agency to enhance Trinidad and Tobago’s flood early warning systems. This collaboration demonstrates the Church’s deep commitment to serving the community and protecting lives.

RDLG’s Disaster Management Unit, in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society, was excited to hand over 20 solar-powered batteries to the Water Resources Agency, made possible by the generous support of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These batteries play a critical role in operating the Community Flood Early Warning Systems, allowing for the measurement of stream flow gauges that help notify communities and emergency responders of potential flooding.

At the handover ceremony, Church President Christopher Danzell remarked, “It’s been wonderful for us, as members of the Church, to do what we can. We are Trinidadians and pledge our support to all the ministries.”

This initiative tackles the growing challenges posed by climate change and flooding. Donating batteries for stream flow monitoring stations ensures the continued functionality of the early warning systems, even in extreme weather events. These systems provide real-time data, enabling communities to respond swiftly and mitigate flooding risks, ultimately protecting lives and property.

The Church’s contribution underscores the power of collaboration and highlights the principle of loving one’s neighbor. As President Danzell emphasized, the Church’s actions are driven by a profound responsibility to improve lives and demonstrate faith in action.

The Church expresses gratitude to all parties involved, including the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government, the Water Resources Agency, and the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society, for their dedication to making Trinidad and Tobago safer and more resilient.
