President Nelson was joined by Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and his wife, Ruth; Elder Walter F. González of the Seventy and his wife, Zulma; and Elder José L. Alonso of the Seventy and his wife, Rebeca.
“You have not given up. We are proud of you. You faithful Saints have lost much, but through it all, you have fostered your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ,” he told the large crowd gathered in the coliseum.
“Members of the Church all over the world have prayed for you. They have wanted to help you,” said President Nelson. “Hundreds came to Puerto Rico to help. They distributed relief supplies, helped with community cleanup and home repair. We continue to be mindful of you.”
The leader of the global faith encouraged those in the audience to reach for Heavenly Father’s power and blessings.
“I plead with you to keep your families united and strong in the faith,” he said. “You can know for yourself that better days are ahead for the Saints of Puerto Rico.”
The prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traveled to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and San Juan, Puerto Rico, Saturday–Sunday, September 1–2, 2018, to meet with members and missionaries hit by Hurricanes Irma and Maria nearly a year ago.
In the Dominican Republic, President Nelson encouraged the Latter-day Saints to follow the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
“My advice today is very simple. Please keep the commandments of God. We need to purify our language, elevate our thoughts and live our lives in obedience to God’s commandments.”
President Nelson also spoke to the Church’s missionaries. Saturday morning, missionaries from the Santo Domingo East and West Missions and the Dominican Republic Missionary Training Center (MTC) gathered at a chapel to hear instruction from President Nelson, the Renlunds and the Alonsos. The meeting was broadcast to all missionaries in the Caribbean Area.

Young women of the Latter-day Saint choir sang for the special meeting with President Russell M. Nelson. He spoke to the congregation gathered in the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot and acknowledged that they had lost much during Hurricane Maria.
